Children’s Health Queensland marked the International Day of People with Disability (3 December) with the launch of its first Disability Inclusion Action Plan, a framework for strengthening access to inclusive, respectful and compassionate healthcare and employment opportunities for all.
The Children’s Health Queensland Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2025–2029 [PDF 8519.47 KB] outlines a clear commitment to reduce physical, environmental and attitudinal barriers for people with disability, and foster a culture that celebrates diversity and champions equity across the organisation.
Children’s Health Queensland Chief Executive Frank Tracey said the plan represented a significant step forward in building a more equitable and inclusive future for consumers and staff.
“We believe every child, young person, family and employee deserves to feel safe, valued and supported — regardless of ability,” Mr Tracey said.
“This plan was developed through extensive consultation, with invaluable input from people with disability. Their insights and experiences have informed the clear, practical steps within the plan to create environments where accessibility and inclusion are embedded in every interaction.”
The four-year action plan is based around four pillars – Access, Build, Connect and Drive – to progress inclusive and accessible environments, education, partnerships and actions that will improve outcomes and experiences for children, young people, and employees with disability.
The plan features the vibrant artwork of emerging Brisbane artist Ruby Herrenberg, who creates original drawings and paintings that celebrate individuality, inclusivity, and creative expression. Ruby won the Emerging Artist Award and the People’s Choice Award in the 2025 Brisbane Portrait Prize.
To celebrate the launch of the plan, the Queensland Children’s Hospital hosted a special event for patients and families, including adaptive gaming activities, art workshops, Sporting Wheelies and information stalls from local support services including Empower Therapy Dogs, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower and Our Pixie Friends.
