Can I give both Paracetamol and Ibuprofen?

Paracetamol and Ibuprofens are very safe to be given together or to alternate through the day. Make sure you adhere to the maximum doses of each.

Do not repeat a dose if your child spits some out or vomits after being given the dose. Wait until the next time they are due. It is helpful to write down when they last had some medication.

When was the last dose of medicine and when can I give another?

Your last dose of Paracetamol was given at __________am/pm. The next dose can be given in 6 hours’ time.

Your last dose of Ibuprofen was given at __________am/pm. The next dose can be given in 8 hours’ time.

What happens if I give too much medication?

If you suspect your child has had too much Paracetamol or Ibuprofen, call the Queensland Poisons Information Centre (13 11 26 in Australia) or take them to the nearest hospital.

Paracetamol that exceeds the maximum daily dose can cause serious liver problems or kidney problems. There may not be any other signs early in overdose to suggest the severity. Ibuprofen in overdose can cause stomach pain and sometimes drowsiness or abnormal breathing.

Medication safety

  • It is important to store medicines out of reach of children. A child-proof cupboard or locked drawer is ideal.
  • Keep tablets wrapped or within their packaging to make it harder for children to get to them.
  • Always leave the Paracetamol or Ibuprofen in their bottles with the child resistant lids.
  • Give the dose that has been recommended for your child’s weight (as recommended by your doctor) or the amount for their age (guide on the bottle).

Frequently asked questions

If my child gets another illness, should I given pain medications before I return to hospital or see my GP?

Yes. Simple pain relief will not mask the signs of serious illness. You can give the medication to make your child more comfortable.

If my child has a fever, should I give Paracetamol to reduce their temperature?

If your child is happy and well with their fevers, there is no need to give Paracetamol. A fever is a normal response to infection (including viral infections) and will help with fighting off the infection. However, if your child is unwell with their fever, give Paracetamol or Ibuprofen to make them feel better. It may not reduce their fever.

Can I give Ibuprofen on an empty stomach?

Your child may be able to take Ibuprofen for a short time (up to 48 hours) with a glass of water, however, if stomach upset occurs you can give it with milk or food. Both medications can be mixed with a small amount of fluid/food like jam or chocolate syrup to improve the taste.

If you are concerned that your child is not improving, please see your doctor.
