Language and communication series – 2019

Supporting bilingual children

This webinar will focus on:
  • How children from Culturally and Linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds acquire language and the factors which impact on their successful language acquisition.
  • Key messages for families about language exposure and bilingual language development.
  • How speech pathologists view language delay in this population – is the delay due to bilingualism or a genuine difficulty?
  • Strategies and resources to support children and families from CALD backgrounds.

Presented by Leanne Sorbello

Leanne Sorbello

Leanne has worked as a paediatric speech pathologist since 1991. Working in both health and education sectors, she has spent a lot of her professional life working in schools and childcare centres. Currently, Leanne works part time at Inala Child Development Service as a member of a multidisciplinary team providing assessment and support for children with complex developmental difficulties. This position involves working predominately with families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. She has developed resources to support this population group and has contributed to an e-book published with the University of Queensland. Leanne has also collaborated with another speech pathologist at the Queensland Children’s Hospital to provide training for interpreters and therapists on how best to work together.

Leanne’s husband is from Milan and she would now define herself as bilingual after many years trying to master the Italian language! She has two boys, 13 and 11, who have been raised in a bilingual language environment.

This project aims to bring together local ECEC educators and other key partners to engage in health content PD that complements the EYLF and provides opportunities for reflective practice. Activities include:

  • Local quarterly free PD events with web-conferencing facilities
  • Face-to-face reflective practice session
  • Question time with local health panel
  • Follow-up electronic newsletter distributed after the PD event
