Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery provides specialised services for children and adolescents requiring surgery for conditions including:

  • facial trauma
  • paediatric hand trauma
  • congenital hand deformities
  • brachial plexus palsy
  • facial nerve palsy
  • microtia, prominent ears and other ear deformities
  • developmental breast anomalies
  • cleft lip and palate
  • craniofacial conditions such as craniosynostosis, congenital facial deformities related to syndromes and neurofibromatosis
  • orthognathic surgery
  • conditions requiring complex microsurgical reconstruction
  • other conditions requiring specialised plastic surgery services such as skin lesions, congenital naevi, keloid and hypertrophic scars.

Who can access this service?

New patients

Referrals are accepted up to a child’s 16th birthday.

Existing patients with complex care needs

Referrals are accepted up to a child’s 18th birthday (patients are usually transitioned to adult services by this time).

Some patients who are older than 18 years of age, e.g. cleft and craniofacial patients, will continue to receive care at the Queensland Children’s Hospital until their treatment is complete.

Catchment area

This service is available to children living in Queensland and Northern New South Wales.

Telehealth appointments are also available to patients living outside the catchment area when clinically appropriate.

Do I need a referral?

You will need a formal referral to access this service.

How do I get a referral?

Referrals are accepted from:

  • paediatric specialists
  • general practitioners.

Information for health professionals

From 1 May 2019 referral criteria will apply at CHQ. This condition has minimum demographic and essential clinical referral information that is required to be included prior to submission of the referral. Visit the CPC website for the required condition. If you are unable to provide the required “essential information” please state the reason when you submit the referral.
