Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology

The Queensland Statewide Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Service provides a full range of elective gynaecology services for children and adolescents aged from 8 to 18 years. Acute services are co-ordinated by the Queensland Children’s Hospital Paediatric Surgical team.

We help children with conditions including, but not limited to:

  • congenital surgical problems and mullerian anomalies
  • Menstrual management and suppression for disabled girls
  • gynaecological and obstetric management if born with complex congenital conditions e.g. bladder extrophy and cloacal repairs
  • disorders of sexual development
  • surgery for vaginal reconstruction and vaginal dilatation
  • endocrine disorders impacting on menstruation
  • menstrual management for girls with complex medical conditions such as metabolic and gastroenterological conditions, and patients from oncology and rehabilitation.

The Queensland Statewide Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Service offers services across 2 locations in Brisbane, and through Telehealth throughout Queensland.

Who can access this service?

Children aged between 8 and 18 years are generally eligible to be referred to the Queensland Statewide Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Service. However, children with complex care needs younger than 8 years and older than 18 years will be accepted following consultation with our specialists.

This service is available to children living in Queensland and northern New South Wales.

You will need a formal referral to access this service.

How do I get a referral?

Referrals are accepted from:

  • general practitioners
  • paediatricians
  • paediatric surgeons
  • gynaecologists.

Other referral information

Please contact the paediatric and adolescent gynaecology Fellow or general gynaecology registrar in the first instance for acute advice, via the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital switchboard. Specialist advice will be provided in consultation with the 3 specialists in Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Services through the Fellow or registrar.

For acute conditions please present to the appropriate hospital department of emergency services to be triaged appropriately and in a timely manner.

Information for health professionals

Referral instructions

Patients will be triaged and generally treated within the relevant Category 1, 2 and 3 time frames.

Please refer children over the age of 14 years to the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital aspect of this Statewide Paediatric and Adolecent Gynaecology service as there is more capacity with an additional specialist available at Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital.
