The cloth heart project

It is a well-known fact that babies are comforted by the smell of their mother and mothers who are expressing breast milk may find ‘let-down’ works better when they can smell their baby. The Cloth Heart Project is an initiative to help this process. Our lactation consultants provide the mother with a packet of three cloth hearts while their baby is in the paediatric intensive care unit. The mother and baby each ‘wear’ a heart which absorbs their scent. The hearts can then be swapped between mother and baby.
