Day Program South offers an intensive mental health service for children and young people aged 5-18 years who require more support than can be provided through a community CYMHS clinic. The Day Program works closely with Education Queensland to provide an integrated education and mental health treatment service. Children and young people attend the program up to 5 days per week and remain living at home and engaged in their local community.
Day Program staff members work collaboratively with children and young people and their families, carers and other support networks. We work with you to identify your goals and develop an individualised program to help you reach those goals. Parents and carers are an essential part of their child’s recovery and also participate in the Day Program by attending meetings and other activities. This is negotiated as part of the plan.
All children and young people who come to the Day Program are assigned a primary therapist. The primary therapist is a staff member of the Day Program’s multidisciplinary team and may be an allied health worker (like a social worker, psychologist or occupational therapist) or a clinical nurse. Your primary therapist will work with you in supporting your recovery.
Children and young people are referred to our service only by a mental health provider. Almost all referrals are received from community Child and Youth Mental Health Services. Talk with your CYMHS worker about whether Day Program could help you.
The Day Program South is located on Level 8 at the Queensland Children’s Hospital in South Brisbane. You will need to be able to get there and home every day. Transport and parking options will be discussed with you.
Who can access this service?
A Day Program South receives referrals for children aged 5-18 who are currently receiving a service from a Community CYMHS team, though now require a more intensive service. Children and young people must be able to travel to and from South Brisbane each day.
The program is available to children and young people who live in the greater Brisbane metropolitan area who can get to South Brisbane daily.

Information for health professionals
In most instances, children or young people and their families will have tried community CYMHS treatment over a period of time without success. The Day Program is an intensive service component on the continuum of child and adolescent mental health care.
Child and Youth Mental Health Service teams can contact the Day Program South Intake Officer to discuss or make a referral.
