Children’s Health Queensland Retrieval Service

CHQ Retrieval Service TeamThe Children’s Health Queensland Retrieval Service, based at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, provides specialised paediatric transport services for critically ill and injured children and young people in Queensland and northern New South Wales. This includes:

Coordination of paediatric transfer (retrieval) services

  • The Children’s Health Queensland Retrieval Service specialises in triaging referrals for critically ill children and young people from metropolitan, regional and remote health facilities via Retrieval Services Queensland.
  • Experienced paediatric medical coordinators carefully assess each child’s individual clinical needs to determine the most suitable health facility to provide care, and if required, the appropriate clinical team and transport service for retrieval.

Transfer of critically ill and injured children and young people

  • Specialist retrieval teams from the Queensland Children’s Hospital are on stand-by 24 hours a day, seven days a week to be dispatched to local communities to accompany patients on transfers between health facilities via road ambulance, fixed wing aircraft (plane), or rotary wing aircraft (helicopter).
  • The retrieval team includes a paediatric intensive care doctor and nurse who can provide lifesaving treatments during transit which are usually only available in paediatric intensive care units, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Clinical telephone advice and telehealth

  • The Children’s Health Queensland Retrieval Service also provides on-demand paediatric critical care advice via phone or telehealth to assist referring clinicians to provide care locally where appropriate.
