Keeping up with school

We know that school work isn’t always the most fun thing to do, but it’s important to make sure you don’t fall behind while you are in hospital. Continuing to learn – even when you are away from your school helps to keep your brain active and growing. It also helps take your mind off being in hospital by giving you new and interesting things to focus on.

Queensland Children’s Hospital School (QCHS) is a Department of Education State School for children from Prep to Year 12. Prep to Year 4 students are taught in the Junior Campus on Stanley Street (located right beside the hospital). Students from Year 5 to 12 are taught in the classrooms on Level 8 of the hospital. Teachers can also come to you if you are unable to leave your inpatient ward. A bedside service for kindy-aged inpatients is available to eligible children as well.

Children can attend QCHS if they are:

  • hospital patients who will need to be absent from their regular school for four or more days
  • siblings or children of patients who are living away from their normal residence
  • outpatients who may need assessment, therapy or treatment that means they are unable to attend their own school.
