Palliative care charter to better support children and families

22 May 2017

Children’s Health Queensland today marked National Palliative Care Week (May 21-28) by hosting the launch of the Charter for children and young people affected by a life-limiting condition.

The new charter outlines a shared commitment between healthcare professionals and families to consistently provide children and young people with life-limiting conditions the highest quality of care and support so they can live as well as possible.

The charter was developed by the Paediatric Palliative Care Working Group of the Queensland Child and Youth Clinical Network in collaboration with InFocus Disability Services (formerly Xavier Children’s Support Network), Hummingbird House and St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Brisbane.

It is also endorsed by the Queensland Clinical Senate and Health Consumers Queensland.

Children’s Health Queensland Chief Executive Fionnagh Dougan said the charter reflected the organisation’s absolute commitment to patient and family-centred care.

“This approach is particularly relevant when a life-limiting condition is diagnosed so we can ensure children, young people and their families, receive high-quality care,” Ms Dougan said. “We are committed to working with health providers, partners and families throughout Queensland to do this.”

Queensland Clinical Senate Chair and emergency physician Dr David Rosengren said the charter would support young patients, their family and clinical staff to talk openly about their wishes after diagnosis of a life-limiting condition and improve care at the end of life.

“Young people with a life-limiting condition and their families need to be empowered to make decisions about how they will live the remainder of their life and spend their final days,” Dr Rosengren said. “And health professionals caring for these patients need the tools to have these difficult conversations.”

Dr Rosengren commended the work of the clinicians and patients and families involved in developing the paediatric charter.

Children’s Health Queensland’s Paediatric Palliative Care Service hosted the launch of the Charter at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.
