Assistance for families

The Welfare Service is part of the hospital’s Social Work and Welfare Department. Welfare workers provide practical support to families and carers whilst their child is undergoing specialist medical treatment at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. Services include:

  • Assessing the social welfare needs of families
  • Assisting with complex travel and accommodation issues for rural and remote families
  • Referral and advocacy to community and financial resources
  • Providing information about support agencies and other useful resources
  • Problem solving around the impact of hospital visits

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services

Indigenous liaison officers are available to provide assistance and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families Monday to Friday, 8am-4.30pm. You can ask hospital staff if you would like to access this service or call the liaison officer on 0411 654 079.

The hospital also has a dedicated meeting place on Level 2 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This space allows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to meet in a quiet place or, relax and take time away from the clinical setting.

Patient travel and subsidy scheme

The Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) provides assistance to families who have no option but to travel more than 50km for their child to receive specialist medical treatment. If your child’s condition cannot be treated at your local hospital there is financial assistance available through the PTSS to partly cover the cost of your travel, as well as accommodation in instances were extended hospital stays are necessary.

How to claim

Approved subsidies are reimbursed by your local public hospital, or ‘home’ hospital based in the area you usually live. Alternatively, you can contact your home hospital before your departure to have your travel and accommodation arranged for you.

Interpreter services

The Queensland Health Interpreter Service provides interpreters in Queensland Health public facilities in more than 130 languages. Interpreters are provided on-site (face-to-face), via video conference or over the phone.

Interpreters are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are provided at no charge to patients or their families.

Professional interpreters (NAATI accredited or recognised) will always be used unless the situation is urgent and a professional interpreter is unavailable. In these cases, a non-professional interpreter will be used.
