About CHQ ieMR

Children’s Health Queensland (CHQ) has taken the next big step towards a fully integrated electronic medical record (ieMR) across its tertiary hospital, community and statewide health service.

A fully digital integrated electronic medical (ieMR) record will allow access to real time patient information that will enable clinicians and service providers to spend less time doing paperwork and more time with patients. It will improve clinical collaboration between colleagues and partners across the state, improve efficiency, and will support best practice clinical care and research.

Parent and carer information

A clinically led approach

The success of this clinical change will be driven by the commitment and teamwork of our clinical staff, supported by a dedicated team of project management and technology experts.

To ensure the ieMR solution is best implemented to suit our needs, a multidisciplinary team of clinical advisors and champions has been engaged to review and/or validate the thinking, design and changes proposed by the team.

“Real time patient information will transform our ability to share time critical information and provide the best possible family-centred care for every Queensland child.”
Fionnagh Dougan, Chief Executive, Children’s Health Queensland

A record of success

In collaboration with Queensland Health, the first stage of the ieMR program was successfully delivered at CHQ from 2014. This was a foundational Cerner Millennium solution including: documentation; advanced growth charts; alerts and allergies; paediatric risk assessment; and document scanning.

In July 2016, foundational ieMR capability was expanded beyond Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital (LCCH) to include the Child Development Program (CDP), a branch of Child and Youth Community Health Services (CYCHS).

In October 2016, the CHQ Digital Program introduced Orders Entry and Results Reporting (OERR) at LCCH and Enterprise Scheduling Management (ESM) at CDP. OERR involved introducing: electronic ordering of pathology and medical imaging; electronic specimen management and the ability to view documented results within the ieMR. ESM is a scheduling system for outpatients that enables clinicians to have a single view of patient appointments in a patient’s ieMR.

In May/June 2017, the CHQ Digital Program introduced foundational ieMR capability to the remainder of CYCHS, including the Child Health Service (CHS) and the School Based Youth Health Nurse Service (SBYHNS).

The next step

In October 2017, CHQ will introduce electronic scheduling and appointment management for community and specialist outpatient areas using the Enterprise Scheduling Management (ESM) system.

This builds on the pilot of ESM in Child Health Development in 2016 and continues our journey towards implementing a fully integrated electronic medical record (ieMR) solution.
