About CYMHS

The Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) provides specialist mental health services for Queensland children and young people up to 18 years of age with severe and/or complex mental health problems.

Our clinicians work collaboratively with children, families/carers and other service providers to provide integrated, individualised, and recovery-orientated treatment that improves the wellbeing of not only children and young people, but also their families and extended carer networks.

This is achieved through a combination of hospital and community based services, outreach programs, telepsychiatry (via videoconferencing), early intervention, forensic, and other specialist services and programs.

Who is eligible for our services?

CYMHS provides comprehensive assessment, treatment, and management for children and young people up to 18 years of age with severe and/or complex mental health conditions. These conditions may include depression, anxiety, suicidal or self-harming behaviour, eating disorders, psychosis, trauma, and significant interpersonal and relationship difficulties.

CYMHS typically treat children and young people where:

  1. the impact of their mental health poses significant difficulty or distress and negatively impacts on their daily functioning
  2. there are difficulties associated with abnormal reactions to life events, such as illness, separation, divorce, or bereavement.

Early intervention or other specialist CYMHS programs may be offered for children or young people who are engaging in substance use; are living with family members who have mental illness or substance abuse; have chronic illness or disability; or are in statutory care or contact with the law.

CYMHS does not typically see children and young people whose problems are solely related to educational difficulties or development delays.

Please note: any issues relating to child protection or safeguarding of a child must be immediately raised with the Department of Communities (Child Safety) independently of any referral to CYMHS.

How to access our services?

To access our services, referrals are generally made by a secondary source, such as a guidance officer, general practitioner, other health professional, to one of our CYMHS Community Clinics. Adolescents can also self-refer. Our community clinics have a comprehensive understanding of CYMHS services and other support agencies, and will ensure that all children and young people are offered the most appropriate service for their current circumstances.

Please contact your nearest community clinic for more information.
