The Emergency Department provides initial assessment, resuscitation, stabilisation and management for emergency presentations for children from birth to 16 years (and up to the age of 18 years for pre-existing chronic conditions and mental health conditions). The department manages:
- manages major trauma and other life-threatening emergencies
- deals with external disasters or pandemics associated with large patient numbers
- acts as the central transfer/referral point for multi-trauma services in Queensland incorporating extensive support services
- accepts and treats retrieved patients but does not form part of the retrieval service.
